Around 1000 elementary and high students have converged at Babag National High School on October 22, 2011 for the annual Division-level School Press Conference in preparation for the regional school  press conference next month.

Dr. Evelyn Gala, English Supervisor of the Division of Lapu-Lapu City, said that the participants to the press conference competed in the different individual writing contests in Filipino and English such as news writing, feature writing, sports writing, editorial writing, and copy reading and headline writing.Gala said lecturers, mostly teachers who are winners in the regional & national competition, were invited to give the participants relevant knowledge and skills in journalistic writing.

The top five winners in each category are qualified to attend the regional press conference next month. The theme for this year’s joint secondary and elementary division-level schools press conference is anchored on “Promoting Digital Literacy through Campus Journalism”.

Participants from both the secondary and elementary schools region wide will be competing in English and Filipino categories in the field of news writing, editorial writing, sports writing, feature writing and in some other fields of journalism such as editorial cartooning, photo journalism, broadcasting, copy reading and editing, headline writing and online reporting. The winners will represent the Division of Lapu-Lapu City in the regional press conference in Mandaue City.

The conduct of the Regional Secondary Press Conference (RSPC) is in accordance with Republic Act No. 7079, or the Campus Journalism Act which aims to promote campus journalism.

The writing competition has its beginnings on November 1931 when the Public Secondary Schools Press Association (PSSPA) had its first convention in what was then Pasig, Rizal. The PSSPA was founded by a high school principal, Ricardo Castro, and had 17 original member schools. During this first convention, writing competitions for the different sections of a school paper were held. The tradition continued year after year, as the number of member-schools increased. (IT Unit)
